“The ever-resourceful, positive and encouraging teacher”
TEACHING
Madeleine has had the good fortune to find a variety of singing wonderful teachers and coaches over the years and now derives huge pleasure in passing on to her own students the wisdom and tools so generously shared with her by, among others, Ashley Stafford, Stuart Kale, Ryland Davies, Ann Murray, Della Jones, Marie McLaughlin, Malcolm Martineau, Jennifer Ringo, Audrey Saint-Gil, Philip Thomas, Matteo Dalle Fratte and her present teacher, Neil Baker.
While developing her vocal technique, Madeleine qualified with a PGCE in Secondary Education from The University of London’s Institute of Education and subsequently worked for two years as a part-time teacher of classroom music and singing at The Tiffin Girls’ School, where she also directed the choirs on tour abroad and coached singers for performances with the West London Sinfonia and at the Royal Opera House.
Since then Madeleine has enjoyed a parallel career in performing and teaching, with a diverse private teaching practice that has encompassed preparing students for ABRSM examinations, concerts and stage work, delivering the music curriculum as Subject Tutor for The University of Kingston’s General Teaching Practice (GTP) programme, coaching for Berkshire Choral International’s summer programmes and running workshops and rehearsals as a deputy conductor for community singing groups such as Teddington and Battersea Choral Societies and The Kew Choir.
The central strand of Madeleine’s current portfolio of teaching draws together her love of words, music and drama with masterclasses in opera and song as Visiting Vocal Tutor at Morley College, The Actors’ Richmond Centre (ARC), Benslow Music Trust, Dartington International Summer School and, most recently, Melofonetica, for whom she has delivered yoga, one-on-one sessions and workshops on ‘Sung Italian in the Body’, and in whose method of Italian coaching she has trained. Her holistic approach to teaching and coaching is further underpinned by recent training in yoga. Madeleine meets herself on the yoga mat, and meets her students where they’re at, guiding them to find their own courage to create and to nurture their authentic voice, always mindful of Rufus Norris’ words to her during her own opera training: ‘It’s not what you would do, but what you could do.’
Madeleine teaches online and in person in London and Suffolk. If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Madeleine here, and see below for information on future workshops.
